Shenzhen, China – 28 June to 1 July 2019

I finish my packing before leaving the house on Friday 28 June - I’m off to Shenzhen for the long weekend. Last minute booking (last night!!); super easy to arrange when the trains leave all the time. I’m trying out the high speed train to China - 14 minutes my booking tells me it will take. A colleague told me yesterday I’ll spend more time in immigration that on the train. I’m sure that will be the case!

The contrast between the air conditioning in ICC and no air conditioning as I walk from ICC to West Kowloon Station hits me like a ton of bricks. Thankfully it’s not too long. Yep it’s HOT!!

On asking a staff member where I go to collect my tickets, she kindly walks me to the correct counters. There are a couple of people in front of me. When it’s my turn I show the lady my order number, she promptly tells me I’m in the wrong place and that I need to go to counter 21-25. Right oh.

As I walk by the staff member who helped me earlier she looks puzzled; I inform her I was in the wrong place.

With three counters open, after a couple of minutes it’s my turn. Order number and passport are handed over, I’m then given my tickets. We have a few false starts with my question, but get there in the end. I’m informed I need to be here at least an hour before the train for immigration. Buggar. I was hoping to leave work an hour before the train. Hmmm let’s see how the day goes. For now it’s off to work I go.

I leave work at 3.20pm, I personally think it’s far too early given my train is at 4.53pm but a few people have told me the lines at immigration are super long. Some people have even missed their train and had to buy a new train ticket. Yeah no thanks! I also have a call at 3.30pm which I need to be on and don’t want to remain in the office to take it. .

It’s an easy walk down to the station then through passport / ticket check. I wait until my call has finished before heading through security. Picture the airport security, that’s where I am.

On arrival at immigration there are no lines at all - huge bonus!

I waste time walking around the Duty Free store (there are no other shops to look at here).

Feeling like I’ve wasted enough time I decide to head to the platform / boarding area.

I follow the signs to the China Immigration Inspection area for foreigners. No wonder the man earlier looked funny when I gave my APEC card, it wasn’t needed at the HK Immigration.

There is only one counter open but thankfully the line isn’t too long. When it’s my turn to have my documents reviewed I’m asked for the immigration slip, whoops I completely missed that. I step aside to complete. I’m a quarter through the form when the counter I’m standing at decides to open. He hurries me to him. Ok then, form isn’t really completed. Hey ho.

After putting my bags through another security check, this one is customs I’m through!

All in all it’s been an easy process. Just a number of different steps to get to this stage.

I have 10 minutes before we are allowed down to the platform.

The ticket gate line I’m in to go down to the platform decides it’s not up for working. I end up follow the others to go through the “security gate” that the staff member opens. As I walk through someone makes an announcement in Chinese, yep absolutely no idea and I’m 100% fine with that!

The end of the train carriage I enter is of course the wrong end. Whoops. It’s a little like salmon swimming upstream to get to my seat which is 1 C so right at the entrance.

The doors close at 4.49pm; I’d seen a sign upstairs advising that boarding closes 5 minutes before departure. No mucking around here.

As we depart HK station (2 minutes early) we are going backwards. Buggar. Thankfully it’s only a 14 minute train ride. We get up to 186 km’s per hour.

Just after 5pm people start to stand up and head to the door. Perhaps we are stopping somewhere en-route. I then realize this will be Futian as it’s basically been 14 minutes. Wow. Super quick!!! I’m super impressed.

I follow the crowd to exit the platform and passenger only area of the train station. There is no immigration given that was done in Hong Kong.

The place is HUGE!! I have absolutely no idea where I’m going but decide to just walk to I see a sign or map.

The station is massive and with next to no one around it feels even bigger. It’s hard to imagine how it would be with so many people around.

Map located, exit 10 confirmed.

As I get to the top of the escalator the heat hits me. Yep it’s hot and humid here as well.

After one false start I’m now walking in the right direction. I’m loving the huge footpaths, blue skies and greenery.

When I see the big red S on the top of the building I turn right, a few minutes’ walk down the road and I’m at the hotel.

Check in is nice and easy. The lady checking me in is super nice and friendly - a pleasant change from other hotels I’ve stayed in.  As soon as I’m in the room I lower the a/c and open the sun shade curtains. And queue relaxing!

Sitting here drinking my vino and watching the world below go by is heaven. So relaxing. Definitely will do this again. One hour after departing HK I’m at the hotel - brilliant. So much easier, quicker and cheaper than getting on a plane.

I decide to head down to the Italian restaurant at 7.30pm; on arrival I quickly notice I’m the only guest. Well this is going to be interesting.

The young boy (yes I sound old.....) seats me. I have a window seat which looks out onto the street and flashing building lights.

The prices of the Cognac blows me away!!!  Yeah, no thanks.  Pizza is ordered and doesn’t disappoint. Thankfully a few other tables arrive during my time.

Saturday 29 June I wake just before 7.45am, a wee sleep in! There had been crazy heavy rain in the night that did wake me. Thankfully it’s gone and the sun is well and truly up and in full force. Yippee.

I decide to take myself outside for a run. As soon as I walk out the hotel doors the heat and humidity hits me. Hey ho, time to get cracking.

I did a 30 minute run around the streets. Always a great way to see a city / town / village. I got lots of strange looks along the way (said a couple of “ni hao’s” as I ran by; there was no one else out there with me.

Walking back into the lobby the massive chandelier "jumps" out at me.

To assist with cooling down I decide to head to the gym to do some stretching. On entering it becomes very apparent this is not a normal hotel gym. It’s huge! And even has a boxing ring. Wow. As I leave the gym I notice the rain has started, buggar! Please be gone by the time I finish breakfast.

The spread at breakfast is like the gym, huge.

I’m in no rush so enjoy just sitting and taking my time.

As I walk into my room the sun is shining - woo Hoo. To the pool I go.

When I collect my towels I’m informed you have to have a swimming cap to be able to swim. What?! That’s annoying. I elect not to take one now. Let’s see what happens.

There is next to no one at the pool which is lovely.

After an hour of being here it starts to drizzle, thankfully the rain doesn’t settle in. What it does bring is mozzie’s; they attack me. I had left the mopidick in the room, time to go and get it. This is a wonderful Japanese product that once you put onto the bite the itchiness is removed. It’s brilliant!!

I have a few more hours at the pool before another round of attack happens. I’m done with this!!

I have a couple of hours relaxing back in the room before walking down the road to meet up with Lauren. My directions to her worked.

We head to the pool around 6pm, it’s still blue sky and HOT! The pool it how it was this morning. Within minutes of sitting down I’m attacked. This really isn’t fun anymore!!

We enjoy dinner at the Italian restaurant in the hotel.

The last day of June (Sunday 39 June) I wake just before 7am. If has been a fairly restless night, not what I wanted nor needed.

I decide the best course of action is a run.

This time I decide to do a bit of research / looking at the map to see where I’m going to go.

Before heading back to the hotel I ask two different groups of people how to get to Carrefour - both use their phone to translate my English to Chinese and then their Chinese to English. I don’t remember people being as helpful in the past. I’m informed it doesn’t open to 10am, right oh I’ll head back to the hotel for breakfast then come back over.

I head back to the hotel a different way. And what do you know Carrefour is open. Result. It’s like a maze trying to get in and through to the actual supermarket part. Mozzie spray located; now for the check-our counters.

The maze is worse getting out! They are clearly trying to keep you in the mall and spending your money!

Laur joins me for breakfast around 10am, the place is full. Like yesterday it’s a relaxed long breakfast - perfect.

When I arrive at the pool I spray the mozzie spray like crazy. I need to ensure I won’t be bitten today.

The thunder begins around 2.30pm, as there are no rain drops I decide to remain where I am. A few minutes later that changes; time to depart.

I’m sitting back in the room watching the heavy rain and busy intersection. Thankfully it doesn’t last for long and before too long we have blue sky.

We decide to head over to Carrefour to check out their imported goods. There are SO many more people around than there was when I was here this morning.

Imported chips in hand. We wander around the prepared food then fruit and vege area. So many interesting things to look at.  Before leaving the shopping center Laur spies a movie theatre; the smell of popcorn takes us in. The friendly guy in front of us acts as our translator. So kind! Popcorn is purchased.

We have a couple of hours in the room relaxing. I get into my book.

We are super original for dinner and return to the Italian restaurant in the hotel. Steak and lamb chops: both are tasty.

Monday 1 July I wake at 5am, no thanks far too early to be up. I manage to go back to sleep for a couple of hours.

There is a lot more people around on my run, it’s a working day in China so it’s to be expected. I find a few shady streets which is heaven!!

As I’m walking back to the hotel (for my cool down) I pass a couple of buildings whose a/c is coming out to the footpath - heaven on earth! Where were you when I was running I ask???!

The super friendly bell boy, who offered to help me when I went out earlier, asked how my run was as I walk back into the amazing air conditioned lobby of the hotel. So lovely.

Post breakfast we return to the room to pack up before heading downstairs to check out. The receptionist was super friendly and very helpful!

I drop one of my bags at concierge before heading to the pool where we remain to about 3pm.  Even though I sprayed myself crazy with mozzie spray they still seemed to get to me!

The fancy gym has a great shower room which we make use off.

It’s an easy walk (less than 10 minutes) to the entrance of Futian Train Station. Once inside it feels like we walk the same distance to get to what is being referred to as the Waiting Area. Tickets are checked against our passports, then we go through security. For now that’s it; Immigration for both China and Hong Kong will be when we get to HK.

We have about 20 minutes in the waiting area before the gates open to head down to the platform.

The train pulls up a couple of minutes to 5pm; we had totally expected to see it on the platform when we came down the escalator.

Within minutes we are all on. The doors close at 5.01pm, absolutely no mucking around here!! Ye ha I’m sitting in the direction the train is going. I definitely don’t feel like I’m in second class! The seats are much more comfortable then they were coming here. I have a couple of minutes to read before we start to slow down. Talk about superfast and super convenient!!

Of course the foreigner China immigration lines aren’t at the end of the train we got off at.....my line moves a lot faster than Laur’s. Helps to have Chinese nationals in front of you!  The HK lines move quicker; seems odd they don’t have the same set up as the airport (where you can exit and enter the country with your HK ID Card).

Would definitely recommend both Shenzhen for a chilled weekend and using the High Speed Train.

I’m returning back to my apartment with absolutely NO trips booked or confirmed. Eeeks.

6 July 2019

Bangkok, Thailand – 6-9 June 2019

There is a small line up at the Kowloon in-town check in on Thursday 6 June. Even for me it’s slightly crazy I’m getting on a flight again given I just landed back into Hong Kong yesterday morning at 5am. This weekend is to “one night in Bangkok” for three nights.

I have friends in HK for the day in-route back to Kiwi land after being in Spain so instead of going to work I head down to the airport express to see them before they head to HK island. If only the a/c was stronger!!

Manda and Haddon arrive at work just before 2pm. It’s been a crazy morning, I’m very glad to be leaving the office!!  It’s a quick trip to the airport - lots of chat about their time in Spain.

We say goodbye at the airport, I’m heading to meet Kat and they are off to get their bag from the locker.

Thankfully security and immigration move quickly - not as busy as expected before a long weekend.

Kat had chosen the Cathay lounge closest to our gate - it’s right opposite, definitely couldn’t get better than that!!  We have about half an hour together before going to board the plane.

The flight passes by quickly. Its a beautiful day so the views are great. We passed a couple of planes and I was amazed how quickly they were going!

On landing into Bangkok it’s a standard long walk to immigration. Good to stretch the legs after the flight.

We are straight through immigration via the APEC line. This time they had airport staff standing outside checking we had APEC cards.

Taking the train to the city is nice and easy; beats sitting in Bangkok travel! We arrive at the last stop and don’t realize it. Whoops. It’s only once lots of people get on that I go and find out. Yep it’s our stop and we need to get off. It’s an easy change to the BTS sky train where we go 6 stops. Our hotel is directly opposite. Perfect!

On check-in we get a recommendation for dinner in the mall across the road. We want proper Thai Thai food :)

We are definitely not the only ones having the same idea of eating here - thankfully a few tables before us aren’t here when their numbers are called so we get in quicker.

Dinner is super tasty!!

I wake super early on Friday 7 June - the alarm definitely wasn’t needed!!

Not having to rush is lovely! Tonight is our dinner at Gaggan (the reason for the trip) so it’s going to be a relaxing day at the pool before then.

Breakfast is a slow affair, perfect!

We then go to the swimming pool.

As the rain starts we move closer to the middle of the umbrella. Everyone else seems to get up and leave. No need, it will pass.  And it did.

About an hour later the rain starts again - this time it’s a lot heavier. People up and leave immediately. We decide to ride it out.

The temperature drops a lot too which is actually nice. We decide to stay put, if we leave we will get absolutely soaked!!

It takes a lot longer to clear than earlier but eventually it does. Fresh towels are exchanged (it’s like they have just come out of the dryer) - the rain was coming at all angles earlier so our ones are soaking wet!

What seems like minutes later the rain drops start again along with the thunder. Yep time to leave!

Back in the room we watch the storm getting worse and worse. The thunder and lightning are loud. Traffic is at an absolute stand still. Hmm we may need to rethink how we get to Gaggan later.

Kat receives an email from Gaggan advising we need to allow an hour to get to the restaurant due to the heavy rain. When we had goggled earlier it was saying 25 minutes to drive or around 35 minutes to take the BTS. With the weather we decide to taxi.  The hotel gives us an umbrella then orders a taxi.

We literally can’t get out of the hotel driveway. Traffic isn’t moving at all!! Our taxi driver seems annoyed by this and decides to change direction. This doesn’t really help at all! After sitting in the taxi for 15 minutes and going maybe 100 meters the driver speaks to us in Thai. We have no idea what he is saying other than BTS and two stops. Right oh, time to get out. The BTS station is right here so it’s a quick dash from the taxi.

We join a long line to purchase tickets, thankfully it moves quickly. Clearly everyone else is thinking it’s best to take the BTS rather than be in a taxi that doesn’t move!

The trains are packed but we manage to get on. Thankfully it’s only 3 stops. When we exit the rain has stopped but man oh man the flooding is CRAZY!!

Walking down the road passing all the street vendors selling food is making us hungry. We continue down to Gaggan.

As we walk down the driveway we notice the staff having a meeting. As we get closer I realize Gaggan is there speaking with his team, WOW!

We are ushered inside and asked for our details. There are already a few other tables here waiting, then within minutes lots of others arrive.

When it’s our turn to be taken to our table we pass an open kitchen; I’m kind of bummed we won’t be on the chefs table. Hey ho it’s still going to be an amazing evening.

We are taken upstairs, Kat is before me so I don’t notice to we get to the top we have seats at the chefs table. Wholly Molley and bottles of amazing Cuban rum - AWESOME!!! We are beyond excited, like kids in a candy store!

As the other 10 guests arrive we are asked if we want to do the wine pairing or order drinks a la carte - wine pairing thanks!

Gaggan, yes Gaggan, comes into the area and chats with the staff then turns on the music. Not what you would expect in a restaurant but it totally works here!

Gaggan introduces himself and gives us 3 rules for the evening. 1. No talking when he’s talking; 2. No smoke breaks (it’s a journey and the smoke changes the taste of the food) and 3. There are only two courses where cutlery is given (either chop sticks or a knife and spoon). All very easy for us to follow.

Gaggan advises they choose the chef’s table by the nationalities so to have a mix of nationalities. You can’t request it or pay for it.

Gaggan stays for the majority of the evening talking to us about each course. WOW

After our first course I honestly thought I’d be hungry at the end of the 25 courses - this is 100% NOT the case! A couple of people I know who have been here before told me not to eat something if I didn’t really like it (as you get so full), there was only one dish like that for me - the mushroom custard soup.

I feel beyond lucky to have got a seat at the chefs table - an amazing evening!!

We decide to walk up the road to the Muse Hotel for a drink before going back to the hotel. It’s nice to be walking after all the food.

We get a table at the roof bar - amazing views! On reviewing the menu we decide not to stay.

Getting a taxi home isn’t easy, we asked two and both quoted a price. When we said no, we want meter they said no. Right oh then we’ll take the BTS. Nice and easy!

Saturday 8 June I wake just before 8am, it has been a fairly restless night. One minute I was too hot then next too cold.  I’m about to head down to the restaurant for a couple of tea when Kat wakes. She’d had a night like me too.

Breakfast is slow and chilled - perfect! Looking at last nights photos is great. What an absolutely amazing experience!!!

The pool is a lot busier today than it was yesterday; we take the same seats as yesterday.

Kat has booked in for teeth whitening this afternoon; I decide to join her.

Man oh man it’s hot when we walk out of the hotel. Doesn’t help that we are in the peak of day. Thankfully there are pockets of shade.

We walk back to the hotel after Kat’s session. Thankfully this time there is a little bit more shade.

Right next to the hotel is a supermarket which we spend time wandering around. There are a few purchases made to take back to HK.

The rest of the afternoon is spent chilling the room.

We decide to take the train to dinner; the entrance is basically directly under the BTS station so nice and easy.

We follow google maps on exiting the station; after a few minutes getting ourselves to a place where we can’t get there without walking a lot. We ask a local man for directions, he so kindly advises he doesn’t speak any English but he’ll take us there. Beyond kind!!

We end up walking down a narrow footpath, on a main road, that isn’t a footpath. We 100% wouldn’t have done this by ourselves!! He points out a few things along the way that we shouldn’t step on. So kind. When we arrive close to the restaurant (which I know as I’ve been before) he points to where we need to go. We try to give him money but he keeps refusing, saying “welcome to Thailand”. Wow. It’s restored my faith with the Thai people.

We have a table upstairs. Afshan arrives a few minutes after us. Dinner is super tasty.

Getting a taxi home isn’t fun. The restaurant had already ordered two for us. As we get in we are told THB 200, ummm no thanks. Meter thanks. He then says THB 150. Again no thanks, meter. He refuses so we get out. There is another taxi right there which happily takes us on meter. Crazy!

We are across the road from the hotel with traffic hardly moving. We decide to get out and walk via the BTS walkway to get across the road.

Sunday 9 June we have a bit of a sleep in. Thankfully it had been a better night sleep wise even though the a/c (and probably all the power) briefly switched off during the night.

We head straight to the pool, after a nice chilled breakfast, where we have a couple of hours relaxing in the sun.

We decide to take the train back to the airport, instead of a taxi. Both trains are super easy, ridiculously cheap and nice and quick.

On check-in we are advised we are wait listed for business class - woo Hoo. This is totally due to Kat’s status. She advises we’ll only do it if both of us are upgraded. Aah. We are nearly done with checking-in when I get a tap on my shoulder; Afshan is at the counter next to us. Talk about timing!

Kat asks if we can take Afshan through the APEC line, yep. Great! So much quicker with security and immigration.

Straight to the lounge we head – champagne and pad thai for three, thank you!

Two minutes ahead of schedule we pull back from the gate. Gaggan you were out of this world amazing!! Bangkok, I’ll be back!

I’m returning to Hong Kong with absolutely no trips booked / confirmed......hmmm let’s see how long that lasts!!.
