St George’s, Bermuda – 28 April – 1 May 2023

I wake half an hour before my alarm at 4.50am on Friday 28 April - Ann and I are off to Bermuda for a long weekend!

Patrick drives us to JFK, I’m shocked at the amount of traffic at 6.15am. This is definitely not for me on a day-to-day basis.

Ann had thankfully booked me a spot through TSA security so as we enter the terminal I’m straight through to Security where there are 3 people ahead of me. Ye ha!!! If she hadn’t done that I would have to the join the looooooong line (showing 25-30 minutes). No thank you!

We meet outside the American Express lounge.

Boarding the plane doesn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. We are both sent back to the desk to have our passports checked. Clearly checking in online isn’t all that flash! Finally it’s our turn and we are through. Ye ha!

Even better we have a seat free between us.

JFK it its normal busy self!

There is a loud Australian man trying to talk to everyone near him. He befriends the lady across the aisle from him and they continue to speak (loudly) for the whole flight. Thank goodness for headphones and bubbles! Some of their conversation did make us and the couple across the aisle from us laugh.

We are all grateful it’s a short flight to Bermuda!

Bermuda is one hour ahead of NY.

Immigration is a little slow with only two counters open. Thankfully we are the only plane here. The loud Australian and Ann chit chat for a couple of minutes, I’m good thanks!

We have a stop at duty free before going to get a taxi to the hotel. Our driver is super friendly and gives us a mini tour on the way.

As check-in isn’t until 4pm we head down to the restaurant for lunch. The view is great! And the food doesn't disappoint.

Ann gets a call saying the room is ready. Great. The view from our floor is great.

We have a couple of hours relaxing in the room.

Late afternoon / early evening we decide to head down to St George’s, on chatting to Concierge they inform us the shops all close at 5pm. Right that will be a no. At least we got out of the room…..even for a few minutes.

Right back to the room for champagne on our balcony.

Before we returned to the room I had asked concierge if they had playing cards. A few minutes after the champagne was popped we have a knock at the door - concierge with some games. Great!

Bubbles and games - perfect way to spend a few hours.

For dinner we head down to the Steak restaurant in the hotel. Dirty martinis are ordered first then we decide on the food. The ladies next to us tell us what not to order (due to the size of the dishes).

We get chatting to the people at the table next of us - they were checking in at the same time as us earlier. We realize we were on the same plane earlier and swap stories about the loud Australian. They definitely have more stories as they were the row behind. The joys! As I said earlier, we are thankful it was a short flight!

Saturday 29 April I wake just before 8.30am, it had been a patchy night due to the crazy dryness in the room.

Breakfast is a slow affair. The coffee is as expected…..like dirty dish water.

We decide to walk into St George’s. First “sight” we come across is Tobacco Bay, which is a popular beach for swimming and snorkelling, or sitting on a beach chair watching the water, drinking and eating!

Right now it’s up hill! Good to burn off some of breakfast! We run into the couple from last night, who are waiting to play the next hole of golf.

Down the hill slightly is The Unfinished Church.

The Unfinished Church is a gothic ruin that building begun in 1874, to replace St Peter’s Church. The name gives it away, but it was never finished due to various complications (split in the congregation and the Cathedral in Hamilton burning down were two of the reasons). It would have been very impressive had it been finished.

As we walk around the outside we realise we can go inside.

We continue downhill, passing the local houses and limestone. I have always loved colourful houses.

According to Wikipedia, St George’s was originally called New London.
St George’s was first settled in 1612.

We wander around the town / village of St George’s, including along the water. Such a shame it’s not better weather.

As the spits of rain increase, we decide it’s time to take cover at a restaurant. Espresso for me, Ann adds martini to her espresso order 😊.

Around 2pm we head to Wahoo’s - a local restaurant we had been recommended. We managed to get the last table. Excellent.

Lunch is tasty!

We decide to walk back to the hotel to burn off some of lunch, as we walk outside it’s pouring with rain. Walk aborted.

A few minutes later a taxi arrives to drop someone off, I manage to make eye contact with the driver and signal we would like the taxi. Bingo, we are in! It’s a short drive back to the hotel.

We have a couple of hours relaxing in the room.

Just before 6pm we head downstairs to the balcony outside the bar to witness the champagne saber. We had been told earlier that it wouldn’t happen if it was raining. Thankfully the rain stopped around 5pm.

Those of us that want it are given a glass with a small amount of bubbles - one sip and I realize it’s not for me. Far too sweet! Probably doesn’t help that we opened a bottle of champagne prior to coming down.

As the crowd disappears, we find a seat and enjoy the view of the pool and water. Hearing the waves is super relaxing.

After a while I head back to the room to get our bottle - yesterday when we asked we were told we can bring our own bottle as long as we provide the glasses.

We watch day turn into night. A sight I’ll never get tired off! We always had people to watch in the pool and sea which kept us entertained as well!

Walking into the bar the first thing I notice is the noise and how busy is it. Great! We see our friends from last night and say hi.

We manage to find a seat – drinks and food are ordered.

Sunday 30 April (how can it be the end of April??!) I wake before 8am. It had been a restless night, the room seemed quite warm.

On opening the curtains it’s blue sky and sunshine. Ye ha!!

It’s a chilled breakfast before we head to the pool.

It’s super relaxing lying here staring out over the pool to the water while hearing the waves. Heavenly!

Mid-afternoon it’s time for a shower before our Afternoon Tea.

We decide to remain where we are and order drinks. I love just staring at the ocean. It’s so soothing.

We watch day turn into night. Unfortunately the sun had gone mid-afternoon so there isn’t any sunset to watch.

Monday 1 May I wake just after 8am. The sun is clearly still sleeping. So glad we had sunshine yesterday.

Breakfast is a chilled affair. It’s so nice not rushing!

At check-out they arrange a taxi to the airport. It’s waiting as we walk out. It’s a short 20 ish minute ride to the airport.

There is a small line when I arrive at immigration, Ann has global access so goes a different way. When it’s my turn I’m told they have my ESTA details already, great. I’m asked how long I’m staying in the US and if I have a ticket out. I sure do!!!

We head to the Priority Pass lounge for a good hour.

We are standing at the gate area waiting for the boarding to commence when they announce we will be leaving 10 minutes early. Excellent!

We pull back from the gate 16 minutes earlier.  Our time in Bermuda has come to an end. It’s a super easy trip from NYC - would definitely return if I lived in the US. NYC here we come!!!
