Can Tho, Mekong Delta, Vietnam – 27-31 December 2024

Our driver arrives just after 1.15pm on Friday 27 December 2024. We are off to Can Tho in the Mekong Delta.

The 2.5 hour journey passes by quickly, always something to look at! The hotel had said 3 -3.5 hours, let’s hope that’s not the case going back to Saigon.

Checking into the hotel is super easy. We were both upgraded and have amazing views of the Mekong! Truly amazing.

We have a couple of hours relaxing, playing cards and drinking wine.

We wander to the mall / shopping center next to the hotel to see what options there are for dinner. Nothing that jumps out so it’s back to the hotel we go.

Half of dinner was ok….the “mains” were not! Mum and I clearly missed the comment on raw prawns.
We don’t be returning here that’s for sure.

I wake just after 6am on Saturday 28 December – far too early to get up! Thankfully I manage to go back to sleep for an hour.

Dad and I go out for a walk, a mix of walking along the Mekong and through the streets. Always sooo much to look at!!

When we arrive at breakfast I order Mum and I a hot black Vietnamese coffee. Not quite what arrives but it’s still good.

We get a Grab into the wharf area and wander around.
We do get asked a few times if we want to go for a tour on the Mekong.

After looking around the small market we go across the road for coffee and cards.
Perfect place for people watching and as we are on a balcony the street touts don’t enter.

I had seen a buggy drive by a few times and decide we should do it.
Its just too hot to be walking around and we are here to sightsee.  A few aborted attempts and it finally arrives and drives us around the city before dropping us back to the hotel.

We head back into mall where Mum purchases a new pair of havaianas and we pick up a couple of things from the supermarket.

Back to the hotel for cards and a couple of hours relaxing before watching the sunset.

We head back into the town area, having dinner at the same place where we had coffee earlier.  It doesn’t disappoint.

The night market is in full swing, we have a short wander around before ordering a Grab back to the hotel.

As we got into the Grab the rain drops started. Talk about good timing!

Sunday 29 December I wake just after 6.30am. Opening the curtains it’s clear some people have been up for a while. There were 3 people doing laps in the swimming pool and a number of boats on the Mekong.

No need to rush for breakfast given we the tour doesn’t start to 10.30am.

We are picked up just after 10.30am for our tour.

First stop is a Binh Thuy Ancient Temple.

Our guide then orders a Grab to take us to where the boat departs from.

After dropping a local off on the other side we head back down the river to a Floating Fish Farm where we get off and wander around.  Not really our thing but needs must when on a tour. We all elect to pass on the koi fish massage.  I’ve done it once (when in KL, Malaysia) and do not need to try it again.

Back onto the boat for a short ride to a tropical fruit island where we wander through to a restaurant for lunch.
They had prepared far too much food for us.

Before leaving the island we head to another area where there is a fish farm in nets.
  Not our thing either but….

Unfortunately Mum falls backwards trying to climb up a huge step.
The staff are all amazing in trying to help which is lovely.  Definitely time to end the tour.

Mid afternoon we are dropped back at the hotel. Playing cards and relaxing is how we spend the afternoon.

We decide to stay in the hotel for dinner, but NOT return to the place we went the first night. We do not need a repeat of raw prawns….

Instead we have drinks at the pool bar then head down to the restaurant for dinner. The food is delicious! Such a shame we didn’t come here on the first night.

There is a light show on tonight which is super cool! Don’t think my photos will do it justice though.

Monday 30 December I wake just before 7am. Dad and I go out for a walk.

We get a Grab to the market area. After a brief wander around head to a restaurant for coffee.

While it’s hot it is nice to be outside and even better when the breeze picks up.

I drop Mum and Dad at the nail place and head off for a walk around. I had read before arriving in Can Tho about the newish pedestrian bridge so go off in search of that.

Back at the nail place we have a short wait before they finish.
It’s nice being out of the sun.

We take a Grab back to the hotel and after a small bite to eat Dad and I head to the pool.
Thankfully the sun is no longer on the pool and with the breeze its very pleasant.

We play more cards before getting a Grab back to the center for dinner.  It’s beyond super busy!!!!

Our window table provides us with instance entertainment.
  Always something to look at.

Dinner doesn’t disappoint either.

Our Grab driver (back to the hotel) is female, our first female driver we have had since being in Vietnam.

Back in the room we play more cards.

I wake early again on New Year’s Eve 2024. Something from last night’s dinner definitely didn’t agree with me!

Dad and I go out for a walk.

After breakfast – I managed two plain bread rolls!! We pack up. Our time in the Mekong has come to an end. I will miss this view!

Our driver is ready and waiting before 11am which is great. Saigon here we come!
