The Blue Lagoon is on Comino Island, the smallest of the 3 Malta islands. White sand seabed, clear waters and the blue being very intense are the draw card to this small island.
The one hour 20 minute bus ride passes by relatively quickly. After following the signs to “ferry to blue lagoon” we are informed the next ferry is in 10 minutes - great timing.
Sitting here waiting the wind picks up, perhaps not the best day to go to the beach.....too late now! A ferry worker calls us, we follow like sheep to a wharf away from where we are standing. Eeks the sea looks choppy. I forgot my sea sickness pills so let’s hope all will be ok.
Man alive the waves are big! There are a few screams as waves splash into the boat. Thankfully where we are sitting we are relatively safe. Long may that continue.
As we arrive at Comino Island we are taken very close to the shore line - the water is amazing! Unfortunately my photos won’t do it the justice. The rocks and caves look great.
As we pull into the Blue Lagoon I gasp - the beach is small and it’s packed!! Doesn’t look like the relaxing day we had thought it would be. The beach chairs are packed in like sardines.
After changing into our togs we walk down to the beach to get two chairs. Thankfully both in the shade and not on the main thoroughfare to the sea. We are definitely like sardines! Very unpleasant to say the least.
Susan is brave and gets fully into the water - it’s too cold for me! I manage to get in as far as my mid-thigh. Eeks alive - COLD!
We decide to take the 1.30pm boat back to Malta - no point sticking around here. Sooo not relaxing! Such a shame. I would recommend people to come as the water is amazing but either come early (before everyone else) or late in the afternoon once a lot of people have left for the day.
We are asked to get onto the speed boat - it’s a giant step down for a short person!! I’m a little concerned how we will fare with the waves and water spray.
Speed boat is definitely the quickest way to and from Comino Island! Thankfully we survive the waves spray!
We have a short wait before the bus to Valletta - enough time to go into the Gozo ferry terminal and change out of our togs.
The journey back is 10 minutes quicker than this morning. Let’s hope tomorrow’s trip will be quicker still!
