Mid-morning (on Tuesday 6 September) we take the mini-metro to the train station; breakfast time (coffee and a croissant) before we board the train to Spello. I know it seems odd eating/drinking at a train station but in Italia it's always very good.
There is a train on the platform when we arrive; a brief Italiano / English conversation establishes that it's our train so we jump on. We have a good 15 minutes before we finally depart.
Spello train station is tiny! There are no staff, which I'd read in the trusty lonely planet so we wander out and towards the hill top village we had seen from the train.
Spello is an ancient town in Umbria enclosed by medieval walls. Lonely Planet informs us it isn’t known for one particular sight, and that a leisurely stroll is the best way to see and explore the town. Off we go!
First stop is the information centre where we are given a map and pointed in the direction to go along with a few sites to visit. As its basically 12.30pm the majority of the sites will be closing for the lunch break so we instead just wander up and up, enjoying the sites along the way.
One of the piazzas we walked by earlier a table of 4 people (at a restaurant) had said good morning to Dad so we decided to head back there for lunch.
Enoteca Properzio is a wine bar, with food, that hosts wine tastings and cooking classes. For us today it will be lunch with a glass of vino.
We wander back down to the train station where we have a bit of a wait before our train back to Perugia. Thankfully it's not too hot and every now and again there is a cool breeze!
Goodbye Spello, you have been a delightful little town to visit.
