Chicago, USA – November 16-20, 2004

For me it’s the day after Turkey Day (Thanksgiving Day) which is generally very slow, so I thought it was about time you heard about my time in Chicago considering I have been back a week.  This email is probably half the size of my SF email so no need to get a cup of tea before you begin!

I left last Tuesday (November 16, 2004) for 5 days for work.  Had normal working days Tuesday, Wednesday and most of Thursday.  Friday was spent assisting with campus recruiting with the students getting them to the correct rooms - a very long and slow day!

I didn't see a great deal while I was in Chicago but did manage to walk to and from work a couple of times down Michigan Street, which they call Magnificent Mile.  It is lined with shops, shops and more shops!  As well as quite a few hotels and the odd museum!  A beautiful walk.  First night I was there I ate in the Hotel and had..........................................New Zealand rack of lamb and I can tell you how good it was!!  So good I went back again on Friday night.

Wednesday night I thought I would venture outside the Hotel after being recommended a couple of places to go to - had a drink at Gibson's (which supposedly is a famous steak place) then dinner at Tavern on the Rush which was very good.  I found food to be quite expensive – you can smoke in bars and restaurants here which I didn't enjoy.

Thursday night we had a dinner for the students at The Signature Room, John Hancock building, on the 95th floor.  Unfortunately it was rather fogging (not me thanks very much!) but throughout the evening it did clear and you could see forever in a day.  Amazing views over Chicago.  The meal was excellent too!

Saturday morning I had a look at a couple of things - the beach (which would be great in the summer) and a few shops.  It was a bitterly bitterly cold day after a great week so I decided to catch an early flight home!
So that was Chicago - nearly all work and no play!!  Definitely wasn't as great as San Fran (which I am still raving about to anyone that cares to listen) but I would like to return in the summer some time.

I am actually returning back to Chicago sometime in the next two weeks and will be taking ALL of my winter clothes!!!!

It’s so hard to believe that Christmas is just a month ago.  This time last year I was getting prepared to return home after 3 and a half years overseas....instead this year I have to undergo my first ever (and I'm sure not my last) American Winter - will I ever be prepared??!!!
